Both / Most Of / Half Of -কে যেভাবে বাক্যে ব্যবহার করা হয়

1. Both kids know the answer. = বাচ্চাদের দুজনই উত্তরটি জানে।
2. Half of the jobs are done. = কাজগুলোর অর্ধেক করা হয়েছে।
3. Most of the class knows the answer. = ক্লাসের অধিকাংশই উত্তরটি জানে।
ব্যাখ্যাঃ  Both এর পর সবসময় plural number হয় এবং verb ও plural হয়। Both দ্বারা দুজনকে বোঝায়।
Half of the / Most of the এর পর singular / plural যেকোনটিই হতে পারে। Half of the / Most of the  এর পর singular number হলে verb singular form-এ হবে আর plural number হলে verb plural form-এ হবে । ২ নং বাক্যে Half of the jobs  এর পর jobs হলো plural তাই are হয়েছে।  ৩ নং বাক্যে Most of the  এর পর class হলো singular তাই knows হয়েছে।
এমন আরও কিছু উদাহরণ–
Most of the people know the answer.= লোকদের অধিকাংশই উত্তরটি জানে।
Both children are absent.= দুজন শিশুই অনুপস্থিত।

4. Both Liza and Shila know/knows  how to swim. লিজা এবং শিলা দুজনই সাঁতার জানে।

Who / Whom- কোনটা হবে ?

1. The woman who called you is here.= মহিলাটি যে তোমাকে কল দিয়েছিল সে এখানে।
2. The woman whom you called is here.= মহিলাটি যাকে তুমি কল দিয়েছিলে সে এখানে।

ব্যাখ্যাঃ বাক্যের মাঝখানে ( ১ নং এ যেমন) who থাকলে অর্থ ‘যে’। who সহ বাক্যাংশে who এর পরিবর্তে he/she/ they ব্যবহার করলে বাক্যাংশটি অর্থপূর্ণ হবে। এভাবে who হবে কিনা তা বোঝা যাবে । যেমন ১ নং বাক্যে – who called you । এখানে who এর পরিবর্তে she ব্যবহার করলে হয় – she called you (সে তোমাকে কল দিয়েছিল) । এটা কি সম্পূর্ণ অর্থপূর্ণ বাক্য না ? হাঁ, এটা সম্পূর্ণ অর্থপূর্ণ বাক্য। তাই ১ নং বাক্যে who ব্যবহার ঠিক আছে।
আবার বাক্যের মাঝখানে ( ২ নং এ যেমন ) whom থাকলে অর্থ ‘যাকে’। whom সহ বাক্যাংশে whom এর পরিবর্তে he/she/ they ব্যবহার করলে বাক্যাংশটি অর্থপূর্ণ হবে না। এভাবে whom হবে কিনা তা বোঝা যাবে । যেমন ২ নং বাক্যে – whom you called । এখানে whom এর পরিবর্তে she ব্যবহার করলে হয় – she you called । এটা কি অর্থপূর্ণ বাক্য ? না , এটা অর্থপূর্ণ বাক্য না। তাই ২ নং বাক্যে whom ব্যবহার ঠিক আছে।
সংক্ষেপে: who/whom সহ বাক্যাংশে who/whom এর পরিবর্তে he/she/ they ব্যবহার করলে যদি বাক্যাংশটি অর্থপূর্ণ হয়, তাহলে WHO ব্যবহার ঠিক আছে , আর যদি অর্থপূর্ণ না হয় তাহলে WHOM ব্যবহার ঠিক আছে ।

Salman hired the gardener whom you recommended.= সালমান মালিকে ভাড়া করেছিল যাকে তুমি সুপারিশ করেছিলে ।
Kamrul, who lives next door, is a marathon runner.=  কামরুল যে পাশের ফ্লাটে থাকে সে একজন ম্যারাথন দৌড়বিদ।

3. The man whom/who I believe is a pilot.= মানুষটি যাকে আমি বিশ্বাস  করি তিনি হলেন একজন পাইলট।
4. My friend told me about a student who/whom has taken the TOEFL test twelve times!=আমার বন্ধু আমাকে একজন ছাত্রের কথা বলেছিলেন যে ১২ বার TOEFLপরীক্ষা  দিয়েছিল!
